Chapter Seven

“There were four of them.”

Raff tried to keep from growling as a slow-burning ager ignited in his gut. Noah was finally talking to him but Raff wasn’t sure he was ready to hear what the man had to say. He knew deep down in his soul that he wasn’t going to like what he was about to hear.

He had carried Noah in out of the rain over an hour ago. After drying him off, he had put the man into his bed and then climbed in behind him. After all the silence, Raff had thought Noah was sleeping, and he was content to just lay there and hold the sad man while he slept.

Except, apparently Noah wasn’t sleeping.

“They caught me as I was leaving the library. I don’t know how they got the keys to the boiler room but it seemed easy enough for them to drag me down there. They took turns, all four of them. They called me horrible, disgusting names while they…while they…”

Raff tightened his arms around Noah when the man shuddered against him. Noah was spilling his guts and it had to be agonizing. It made him wonder if he had ever told anyone what had happened to him.

“I don’t know how long I was there before I was discovered by the maintenance man but it had to have been a couple of days.”

“Fuck.” Raff knew from Noah’s reactions when they had sex that there was a dark spot in his past. He never dreamed that it would be something like this.

“My father came to see me while I was in the hospital,” Noah continued. “He said since I thought I was gay, he felt he had a duty to give me a taste of what being gay was like. He asked me how I liked it.”

“He did what?” Raff roared as he pulled Noah by the arm until the man rolled over onto his back. “Are you saying your father hired those men to rape you?”

Noah swallowed hard before turning his head away. “He said if I didn’t take my proper place in the family, he would insure that the same thing happened to my baby brother. Sammy was just a teenager then, not even out of high school.” Tears swam in Noah’s baby blues as he turned back to look up at Raff. “I made my father a deal. I would become a doctor like he wanted and marry Jenna if he promised to leave Sammy alone.”

Raff frowned as he thought about what he knew of Sammy’s relationship with his family. It was dismal at best. “Is that why Sammy isn’t close to you and your parents?”

“I refused to marry Jenna until they disowned him and kicked him out. It knew it was going to be hard on Sammy but he’d be safe away from our parents.” Noah’s breath was shaky, uneven. “As long as I toed the line, they left Sammy alone.”

Raff’s eyes went to Noah’s bandaged hand. He winced at the small spots of red he could see seeping through the white gauze.
